Body Mass Index is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2 where kg is a person’s weight in kilograms and m2 is their height in metres squared.
A BMI of 25.0 or more is overweight, while the healthy range is 18.5 to 24.9. BMI applies to most adults 18-65 years.
Research has shown that BMI is strongly correlated with the gold-standard methods for measuring body fat. And it is an easy way for clinicians to screen who might be at greater risk of health problems due to their weight.

Who shouldn’t use a BMI CALCULATOR?
BMI is not used for muscle builders, long distance athletes, pregnant women, the elderly or young children. This is because BMI does not take into account whether the weight is carried as muscle or fat, just the number. Those with a higher muscle mass, such as athletes, may have a high BMI but not be at greater health risk. Those with a lower muscle mass, such as children who have not completed their growth or the elderly who may be losing some muscle mass may have a lower BMI. During pregnancy and lactation, a woman’s body composition changes, so using BMI is not appropriate.
Healthy BMI in Adults
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that for adults, the healthy range for BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.
- Overweight is defined as a body mass index of 25 to 29.9, and obesity is defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher. These BMI cut points in adults are the same for men and women, regardless of their age.
- Worldwide, an estimated 1.5 billion adults over the age of 20-about 34 percent of the world’s adult population-are overweight or obese. By 2030, this is expected to rise to more than 3 billion people.
For clinical and research purposes, obesity is divided into three categories: Class I (30-34.9), Class II (35-39.9) and Class III (40). With the growth of extreme obesity, researchers and clinicians have further divided Class III into super-obesity (BMI 50-59) and super-super obesity (BMI60).
Risk of developing health problems, including several chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, rises progressively for BMIs above 21. So does the risk of dying early. There’s also evidence that at a given BMI, the risk of disease is higher in some ethnic groups than others.

Your BMI is...... How good is BMI as an indicator of body fatness? The correlation between the BMI and body fatness is fairly strong1, but even if two people have the same BMI, their level of body fatness may differ. In general, The accuracy of BMI as an indicator of body fatness also appears to be higher in persons with higher levels of BMI and body fatness. While, a person with a very high BMI (e.g., 35 kg/m2) is very likely to have high body fat, a relatively high BMI can be the results of either high body fat or high lean body mass (muscle and bone).
